Fisheries Control Agency provides training for third countries in Mediterranean region

On Thursday 4 July, the European Fisheries Control Agency announced that it had organised training for fisheries monitoring centre (FMC) operators as part of the e-FishMed project launched by the European Commission and the RESUP Algeria project, financed by the EU as part of the ‘Blue Economy - Fisheries and Aquaculture’ programme.

The European Fisheries Control Agency trained participants in the use and analysis of vessel monitoring systems (VMS), automatic identification systems and other new monitoring technologies, such as satellite imagery. FMC operators from Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia took part in the training. They had the opportunity to share their experiences and best practices and to visit the agency’s coordination centre in Vigo, Spain.

The e-FishMed project aims to improve the control and monitoring of fishing activities through a better common understanding of the rules to be applied (see EUROPE 13391/10). RESUP Algeria supports the Algerian authorities in their efforts to monitor conservation and management measures adopted at international, regional and national level and to combat illegal fishing.
