On Wednesday 3 July, local and regional leaders of the Commission for Territorial Cohesion Policy and EU Budget (COTER) of the European Committee of the Regions adopted a draft opinion on the common European data space.
They stressed the crucial importance of data in optimising transport services and infrastructure and improving mobility solutions throughout the EU. They identified the need for interoperable data frameworks that facilitate the seamless integration of transport data across different modes of transport and geographical regions. This is why they called for the creation of a comprehensive data ecosystem in mobility and logistics, comprising a network of participants managing and sharing data in order to generate value. This ecosystem will, however, have to guarantee the protection of privacy and security, by treating human-related data as a valuable and sensitive asset in the data economy.
“The European Mobility Data Space will empower cities and regions to make smarter decisions using real data”, explained the opinion’s rapporteur, Zdeněk Hřib (Greens, Czech), first deputy mayor of Prague. “Successfully implementing this concept will be pivotal in reshaping our entire mobility landscape”, he concluded.
