On Thursday 4 July, the European partnership for semiconductors (‘Chips Joint Undertaking’) announced the launch of several calls for projects, with a total budget of €325 million, to support semiconductor research and innovation initiatives. This is part of the ‘Chips for Europe’ initiative under the Chips Act (see EUROPE 13229/23).
States participating in the joint undertaking should provide additional financial support.
These calls for projects will aim to establish, among other things, a pilot line for photonic integrated circuits (PICs), which offer better environmental performance and process and transmit information at higher speeds.
The aim of the calls for projects is also to support the creation, deployment and networking of chips competence centres in States participating in the joint undertaking to help companies, particularly SMEs, to develop their skills.
Finally, the calls will support a project to create an online design platform, based on cloud computing, which will allow users, particularly from research and industry, to design and develop their new chips.
Information sessions will be held on 11 and 12 July.
