EU adopts new rules to reduce energy consumption of industrial fans

On Wednesday 3 July, the European Commission adopted new harmonised rules to reduce energy consumption and facilitate the repair of industrial fans, replacing the existing 2011 regulations.

These measures, which cover different types of industrial fans (with an electric input power between 125 W and 500 kW) and applications, are designed to reduce energy costs for European businesses and give manufacturers of “efficient, sustainable and repairable” products a competitive edge.

The regulation sets out enhanced information requirements and revised energy efficiency thresholds that will ensure that only industrial fans that comply with recent standards are placed on the EU market from June 2026.

By 2030, the new rules should make it possible to reduce the overall electricity consumption of industrial fans in the EU by around 31 TWh per year, equivalent to the energy consumption of 10 million electric vehicles.

In addition, the Commission estimates that consumers and businesses will save around €4 billion a year through lower energy bills and reduced replacement costs.
