On Tuesday 2 July, the European Union condemned the launch the previous day of two ballistic missiles by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), which constitutes “another violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions”.
These launches follows joint military exercises between South Korea, Japan and the United States, denounced by the DPRK, which warned on 30 June of “fatal consequences”.
In a statement issued by the European External Action Service (EEAS), the EU once again called on the DPRK to put an end to these illegal actions, to accept offers of dialogue from the parties concerned and to comply with its obligations under United Nations Security Council resolutions.
“We are also gravely concerned by deepening DPRK-Russia cooperation in flagrant violation of multiple United Nations Security Council resolutions”, the statement said, calling on the DPRK and Russia to cease their illegal arms transfers.
The EU said that it is ready to work with all partners to promote a diplomatic process leading to the complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula. (Original version in French by Pauline Denys)
