HUNGARIAN PRESIDENCY OF THE COUNCIL OF THE EUROPEAN UNION / Health

Pharmaceutical package, fight against cardiovascular disease and organ donation are Hungary’s priorities for its Presidency of EU Council

In the aftermath of the coronavirus epidemic, particular attention must be devoted to those segments of health policy that have been neglected or where necessary reforms have been delayed in the past”, points out the Hungarian Presidency of the EU Council in its work programme for July to December 2024.

The Hungarian Presidency intends to continue negotiations on the package of proposals revising the EU’s pharmaceutical policy “in order to achieve as much progress as possible”. The European Parliament has adopted its position on this subject and the provisional timetable provides for a common position on this legislation at the EU ‘Environment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Protection’ Council on 3 December (see EUROPE 13437/7).

At this year-end EU Council meeting, the European ministers are expected to adopt conclusions on two issues: measures to combat cardiovascular disease and EU cooperation in the field of transplants (organ donation).

Other subjects will also feature in the debate, such as rare diseases, the links between mental health and various emergencies, and cooperation between Member States on access to medicines.
