Manon Aubry and Martin Schirdewan re-elected Co-Chairs of The Left Group in European Parliament

The Left Group in the European Parliament group re-elected its Co-Chairs, Manon Aubry (French) and Martin Schirdewan (German), on Wednesday 3 July. “We will proudly be the voice of resistance in the face of the far right, the alternative to von der Leyen and the hope for workers in Europe”, declared Manon Aubry after her re-election.

She will co-lead the group for 5 years, while Martin Schirdewan will hand over to Konstantinos Arvanitis (Greek) after 2.5 years in order to share the chairmanship of the group with the Greek party Syriza, which provides four members.

“The Left Group also appointed Maj Aslett-Rydberg of Denmark as its new General Secretary on Wednesday 3 July. Ricardo De Sá Ferreira, Panayota Maniou, and Stelios Christodoulou were confirmed as deputy general secretaries.” In addition, on Thursday 4 July, The Left is due to consider the request from the Italian party Movimento Cinque Stelle to join the group. Eight members of the Movimento Cinque Stelle party were elected to the European Parliament on 9 June.

Once the group has been set up, which is also due to take place on 4 July, The Left could have up to 50 members, according to an internal source. (Original version in French by Léa Marchal)
