The competitiveness of the European aquaculture sector is one of the key priorities of the Hungarian Presidency of the EU Council in the area of fisheries, according to its six-month work programme.
In cooperation with the Member States, the aim of the Hungarian Presidency is to develop a holistic and integrated approach that promotes the development of sustainable marine and freshwater aquaculture within an appropriate institutional framework. This subject will be on the agenda of the informal meeting of Directors-General for Fisheries in July.
At the EU Council meeting on 21-22 October, the European fisheries ministers are expected to reach a political agreement on fishing opportunities for 2025 in the waters of the Baltic Sea.
Following a debate on the European Commission’s proposals at their meeting on 18 November, the ministers will attempt to reach an agreement on setting the 2025 total allowable catches (TACs) in the waters of the Atlantic and North Sea and fishing opportunities in the Mediterranean (see EUROPE 13438/13).
At the EU Council meeting on 23 September, the ministers will discuss the annual consultations with the United Kingdom on fishing opportunities for 2025.
