25/06/24 (Agence Europe) – Governments will meet to work on the ‘Ocean Treaty’ this week at the United Nations headquarters in New York, according to the non-governmental organisation Greenpeace. This will be the first time since the United Nations Ocean Treaty opened for signature in September 2023, says Greenpeace. Sixty ratifications are required for the ‘Ocean Treaty’ to enter into force. Seven countries have ratified it to date. The aim, supported by France and the United States, is for the treaty to be in force before the United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice in June 2025. “If governments really want to keep their promise to protect 30 percent of the world’s oceans by 2030, then they must make serious and significant progress this week in New York,” said Meg Randles of Greenpeace New York.
