25/06/2024 (Agence Europe) – The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) welcomed the release of whistleblower Julian Assange, on Monday 24 June, as a “significant victory for media freedom” in a statement issued on Tuesday. The criminalisation of “normal journalistic practices”, in particular encouraging sources “to confidentially share evidence of wrongdoing”, was at stake, according to the organisation. The withdrawal of 17 of the 18 charges against Mr Assange avoids this, according to the IFJ. “Μobilisation pays off”, enthused Marc Botenga MEP (The Left, Belgian) on X. “Let’s remain vigilant for the future”, concluded the MEP, reminding us that “this release is the result of a worldwide campaign”. On 17 May, Mr Botenga co-signed a letter to the UK Home Secretary opposing Assange’s extradition. Initiated by Patrick Breyer (Parti Pirate, German), it was signed by 31 MEPs. (FS)
