In a communication published on Tuesday 25 June, Climate Action Network Europe urges the EU Member States to finalise and submit their National Energy and Climate Plans (NECP) by the 30 June deadline. This request is in line with the commitments of the ‘Fit for 55’ package and the Paris Agreement.
The NGO coalition points out that while Belgium, Denmark, Italy and Spain are on track to meet this deadline, delays are expected for other countries, notably France and Portugal, which may not submit their revised plans before December.
These delays could be attributed to internal political factors, such as the opposition of certain political parties - on the far right - to renewable energies, as is the case in France, where legislative elections are coming up.
For CAN Europe, these delays and insufficient commitments could compromise the EU’s overall objectives, to the detriment of the collective efforts needed to effectively combat climate change. The NGOs are therefore calling for immediate action to ensure that all Member States make a significant contribution to this cause. (Original version in French by Nithya Paquiry)
