European Commission launches pilot mechanism to boost hydrogen production

The European Commission has opened a call for tenders to support the development of the European hydrogen market (see EUROPE 13410/24). From mid-2025, it should help to link hydrogen suppliers and buyers, identify market dynamics and provide information on project financing opportunities.

The pilot mechanism, which is part of the European Hydrogen Bank, is due to last at least five years. The Commission hopes that it will enable the development of hydrogen production on the continent. Few projects are currently underway in this area, against a backdrop of growing demand.

Thanks to the future mechanism, buyers will not only be able to find suppliers, but also to get an overview of hydrogen requirements. For their part, producers will be able to find buyers and partners with whom they can apply for projects. The mechanism is based on AggregateEU, the joint gas purchasing platform (see EUROPE 13360/21).

In order to set up and run the pilot mechanism, the Commission has launched a call for tenders open until 12 August.
