EU “better prepared” and “more effective” in tackling major crises, according to new study

A new Eurobarometer survey published on Monday 3 June shows that the European public sees the EU as being better prepared to deal with major crises than it was five years ago.

69% of respondents said that European responses to natural disasters, such as earthquakes or forest fires, are “effective” or “very effective”.

61% said the same about the EU’s response to health emergencies such as Covid-19, swine flu and bird flu.

A large majority of respondents (over 79%) are in favour of a more active role for the EU in crisis management, in collaboration with national authorities.

It should be noted, however, that responses were more mixed on the effectiveness of the EU’s response to the impact of violent conflicts (Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, for example). 47% consider it to be “effective”, compared with 47% who consider it to be “be ineffective”.
