The Council of the European Union updated, on Monday 27 May, the list of persons targeted by the EU’s restrictive measures against the Syrian regime and its supporters, in view of the deteriorating situation in Syria.
A total of 316 individuals and 86 entities have had their assets frozen, and EU citizens and companies are prohibited from making funds available to them. Individuals are also subject to a travel ban preventing them from entering or transiting EU territory.
On Monday, the EU Council also decided to extend the application of the humanitarian exemption introduced in February 2023 (see EUROPE 13223/36), in view of the seriousness of the humanitarian crisis in the region (see EUROPE 13417/3).
This exemption from the freezing of assets and the ban on making economic resources available to sanctioned individuals and entities is intended to facilitate humanitarian operations.
The bans, set out in a European regulation of January 2012 (see EUROPE 10534/24), which hamper the delivery of humanitarian aid will not apply until 1 June 2025, reads the EU Council decision, published on Tuesday in the Official Journal of the EU. (Original version in French by Bernard Denuit)
