European Commission announces €201 million in humanitarian funding

On Tuesday 28 May, the European Commission announced €201 million in funding from the European Union in 2024 to help almost 35 million people affected by a humanitarian crisis in the Sahel region.

In particular, €26.9 million will be allocated to humanitarian projects in Burkina Faso, €21 million to Cameroon, €57.9 million to Chad, €24 million to Mali, €5.7 million to Mauritania, €24.6 million to Niger and €31.5 million to Nigeria.

The funding will support food security and assistance with malnutrition, healthcare and protection, water, sanitation and hygiene, shelter and education activities, as well as the transport of aid workers and supplies to remote and inaccessible locations”, the European Commission said in a statement on Tuesday.

The food and nutrition crisis is one of the main consequences of the ongoing armed conflicts in the region, particularly in Mali, where the EU’s training mission with the Malian Armed Forces (‘EUTM Mali’) came to an end on Saturday 18 May, after almost 11 years of work on the ground (see EUROPE 13415/21).
