EU and New Zealand welcome entry into force of their free trade agreement

The European Union and New Zealand reaffirmed the strength of their bilateral relationship at a Joint Committee meeting in Brussels on Monday 27 May.

Celebrating the entry into force of their free trade agreement on 1 May (see EUROPE 13378/29), they stressed their support for a rules-based trading system against a backdrop of global geopolitical tensions.

The comprehensive trade agreement speaks for the shared values of the EU and New Zealand, such as meaningful climate action, and economic and social sustainability, and provides a platform to further deepen our trade relationship and reduce non-tariff barriers”, said the EU in a statement issued by the European External Action Service (EEAS).

New Zealand’s association with the Horizon Europe Research Framework Programme was also welcomed by both parties, who look forward to working together to tackle global challenges such as climate change and digital adaptation.

The two parties then welcomed the entry into force of an agreement on the exchange of personal data between Europol and the competent New Zealand authorities for joint investigations into terrorism, child sexual abuse and cybercrime.

Condemning Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, both sides expressed their long-term support for Ukraine and reaffirmed the “urgent need” for a ceasefire in the conflict between Israel and Hamas, advocating a two-state solution.

Lastly, they committed to continuing their cooperation in the areas of climate change, agriculture and maritime safety, particularly in the Pacific region. (Original version in French by Pauline Denys)
