On Tuesday, 21 May, six MEPs from the European Parliament’s Greens/EFA group wrote European Investment Bank (EIB) President Nadia Calviño to condemn the funding of private, for-profit healthcare providers in developing countries.
“Investigations conducted by Oxfam and others show that the EIB has, through intermediaries, funded for-profit hospitals in southern countries and that gross misconduct has taken place in these hospitals. Some of them notably blocked or bankrupted poor patients, preventing them from getting care, and in some cases, they even detained them”, David Cormand (Greens/EFA, French), standing rapporteur on the EIB’s activities, told Agence Europe on Tuesday, 28 May.
The signatories ask Mrs Calviño to put an end to this type of investment in low- and middle-income countries and to conduct an independent investigation into all active and historic investments.
