Strasbourg, 18/01/2012 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 18 January, diplomatic sources indicated that EU member states had decided to adopt new sanctions against Syria. The sanctions consist of freezing assets and preventing 22 individuals and eight organisations entering EU territory, due to the “brutal” repression of the Syrian regime against its people and human rights violations.
This decision has been taken at a diplomatic level and on Monday 23 January it is also expected to be taken at the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels. One source indicated that “as long as the repression continues, we will make our restrictive measures tougher”. If these measures are adopted, 38 undertakings and 108 people will be subsequently affected by the sanctions. (CG/transl.fl)
