23/05/2024 (Agence Europe) – The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has responded to requests for clarification from the European Commission and fifteen MEPs regarding the banning of the European flag during the Eurovision Song Contest at the beginning of May (see EUROPE 13409/27). The EBU understands why the representatives of the two EU institutions are concerned and assured them that no flag was explicitly banned and that there was no desire to “discredit” the European flag, “an important symbol of European unity and solidarity”. It states that “concerns were raised over the potential for disruptions to the Song Contest, resulting from the sensitive global political context”, which led to increased security measures at the venue and stricter application of the list of accepted flags. This list was restricted to the participating countries and the rainbow flag representing the LGBT community. The EBU has promised to review its “policy” for the 2025 edition in Switzerland.
