On Wednesday 22 May, the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) and the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Gas (ENTSOG) published their draft joint scenarios for electricity, hydrogen and natural gas, which will serve as the basis for the Ten-Year Network Development Plans (TYNDPs) 2024 for electricity and gas.
These scenarios, the fourth since 2018, assess the interactions between electricity, gas and hydrogen networks in order to determine infrastructure requirements from an integrated system perspective. They include ‘National Trends’ scenarios reflecting Member States’ policies, as well as ‘Global Ambition’ and ‘Distributed Energy’ scenarios aligned with the EU’s climate objectives.
For Piotr Kuś, General Director of ENTSOG, hydrogen is the “game changer” in these scenarios, as it “contributes to the transition of the current gas system towards carbon neutrality and to the optimisation of the potential of renewable energy sources”.
The scenarios will be consulted by the Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER) and the Member States before being reviewed and approved by the European Commission.
