Commissioner Elisa Ferreira launches latest edition of EU Regional Social Progress Index

On Thursday 23 May, the European Commissioner for Cohesion, Elisa Ferreira, launched the latest edition of the EU’s regional social progress index, at an event organised in Brussels by the European Committee of the Regions (CoR).

This index measures social progress in the regions of the EU and enables the Commission to assess the quality of life and well-being of its citizens.

We have been saying for a long time that the GDP is a useful tool to assess how EU regions are progressing, but it does not provide the full picture. Economic indicators, social indicators but also indicators on wellbeing, citizen perceptions and trust all have their role to play”, according to the Commissioner.

The index measures well-being and social progress in the EU’s regions by tracking 53 socio-economic and environmental indicators.

Across the EU as a whole, around 60% of people live in regions exceeding the average social progress score. This figure falls to 50% if we focus solely on basic needs such as healthcare, sanitation and housing, according to the index.
