Luis de Guindos outlines possibility of first 25-basis-point reduction in rates in June

On Thursday, 23 May, Vice-President of the European Central Bank (ECB) Luis de Guindos outlined what the ECB’s monetary policy decisions during the next meeting of the ECB’s Governing Council in Frankfurt on Thursday, 6 June, could include.

In an interview with Dietmar Mascher and Alexander Zens for Oberösterreichische Nachrichten, Mr de Guindos indicated that the ECB had been transparent about its forthcoming decisions and that the prudent approach (see EUROPE 13394/15) could consist of reducing key interest rates by 25 basis points.

However, he stressed that there is still uncertainty and that nothing had been decided as far as the number of rate cuts to come and their size are concerned. He indicated that [these details] would be decided based on data. (Original version in French by Émilie Vanderhulst)
