European Commission gives green light to revision of Irish recovery plan

On Tuesday 21 May, the European Commission approved Ireland’s revised post-Covid-19 recovery plan, which includes a ‘REPowerEU’ chapter designed to speed up the energy transition and reduce dependence on Russian hydrocarbons (see EUROPE 13378/25).

With a total of €1.15 billion in grants alone, the Irish plan now includes 11 reforms and 19 investments. More than half of the funds will be allocated to climate action, in particular to finance increased deployment of offshore wind energy, biomethane production, the development of rail between Dublin and Drogheda and greater energy efficiency in schools and hospitals. More than a third of the Irish plan will also be devoted to strengthening the digital transition, through vocational training, providing equipment for vulnerable students and stimulating innovation within dedicated hubs. The issue of housing costs is also being addressed.

On Tuesday, the Commission also approved payment of the first European financial aid instalment, totalling €324 million.
