22/05/2024 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 22 May, the Committee of Permanent Representatives of the Member States to the EU (Coreper) gave the green light to the position that the EU will adopt at the next meeting of the Energy Charter Conference in the autumn, aimed at modernising the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT). The European ministers will vote on this proposal to approve the agreement to modernise the Treaty at the Energy Council on 30 May. This will bring it more closely into line with the principles of the Paris Agreement (see EUROPE 13384/10), before the Union withdraws fully from it. On 7 March, the EU Council approved the proposal for coordinated withdrawal from the Treaty (see EUROPE 13366/9). However, the procedures that will allow those Member States that wish to do so to remain contracting parties to the Treaty once the EU has withdrawn have yet to be defined. (PLD)
