EU Council agrees on new sanctions against Russian regime in response to death of Alexei Navalny

22/05/24 (Agence Europe)On Wednesday 22 May, the ambassadors of the Member States to the European Union (Coreper) reached an agreement on the introduction of new sanctions relating to the political situation in Russia, notably in response to the death in mid-February of opposition figure Alexei Navalny while he was in prison. These sanctions, which are in addition to those already adopted under the EU’s human rights sanctions regime (see EUROPE 13377/16), will be formally adopted at the Foreign Affairs Council on Monday 27 May. On Wednesday, Coreper continued discussions on the 14th package of sanctions targeting Russia in response to its military aggression against Ukraine (see EUROPE 13406/1). This package will affect the Russian liquefied gas sector in particular and will target over 100 senior figures in the regime. It will take several weeks of work before the Member States reach a unanimous agreement. (MB)
