21/05/24 (Agence Europe) – The opening of two Italian-run migrant centres in Albania, scheduled for Monday 20 May, has been delayed due to unfinished construction work, an Albanian port official was quoted by AFP as saying on Monday 20 May. Under a controversial agreement with Italy, Albania is to receive migrants rescued from international waters at a centre in Shëngjin, on the Adriatic Sea, and then process them at another centre inland. But construction work is still under way. The two centres, financed and managed by Italy, could simultaneously accommodate up to 3,000 migrants rescued at sea by Italian ships. This agreement is one of the measures promoted last week by 15 Member States to prevent illegal immigration into the EU (see EUROPE 13411/3). (SP)
