The European Olympic Committees (EOC) signed a memorandum of understanding with the Metropolitan Municipality of Istanbul and the Turkish National Olympic Committee (NOC) on Thursday 16 May in Rome (Italy), with a view to the 2027 European Games.
The signing by EOC President Spyros Capralos, Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu and Turkish NOC Vice-President Kazım Kiremitçioğlu precedes the formal ratification of the agreement by the EOC General Assembly in June.
In a press release published on 19 May, Spyros Capralos stated that “the Memorandum of Understanding signed today will enable the European Olympic Committees to work in agreement with the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and the Turkish Olympic Committee to offer a very special event to the whole of European sport”.
The decision to award the Games to Istanbul was taken on 20 March. Subject to ratification by the EOC General Assembly, the EOC, the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and the Turkish NOC will subsequently sign the host city contract. (Original version in French by Nithya Paquiry)
