Patent applications increased in 2023

The European Patent Office (EPO) again recorded an increase in patent applications in 2023, which totalled 199,275 (+2.9%), according to a report published on Tuesday 19 March. In 2022, applications had already risen by 2.5% (see EUROPE B13151A30). 

In contrast to 2022, the proportion of patents granted following an application increased significantly (+28%). In fact, 52% of patents applied for were granted in 2023, compared with 42% in 2022.
