14/03/2024 (Agence Europe) – The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, informed the Conference of Presidents at a meeting on Thursday 14 March that she would follow the advice of the Committee on Legal Affairs (JURI) on Monday 11 March to take the European Commission to court for misuse of EU funds (see EUROPE 13369/10). She has until 25 March to bring the case before the Court of Justice of the EU on behalf of the European Parliament. This decision follows a vote by the JURI Commission, which considered that the release of €10 billion in European funds for Hungary was unfounded. For the MEPs, there is reason to believe that the Commission did not base its decision on improvements in the rule of law in Hungary, but was influenced by political considerations. (IS)
