All the European finance ministers have expressed their support for the candidacy of Kristalina Georgieva, who is seeking a second term at the head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), declared Belgian Finance Minister Vincent Van Peteghem on Tuesday 12 March, alongside the Ecofin Council.
In his view, the unanimous position of the EU27 is “a clear sign of the trust that we have in Kristalina Georgieva but also the importance of the position”. Hoping for a “rapid” selection procedure, he praised Ms Georgieva’s “strong leadership” during the recent unprecedented macroeconomic crises and her ability to support IMF member countries.
The Fund’s Executive Board has yet to launch the official selection process.
Former European Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva of Bulgaria has announced her intention to lead the IMF for a further 5 years, even though her first mandate expires at the end of September (see EUROPE 12323/19). (Original version in French by Mathieu Bion)
