Boom in television series and video-on-demand between 2015 and 2022 would have contributed to insecurity of European directors and writers

06/03/24 (Agence Europe)On Tuesday 5 March, the Council of Europe’s European Audiovisual Observatory published a report entitled “Writers and directors of film and TV/SVOD fiction: 2015-2022 figures”. This document bears witness to the changing landscape of audiovisual creation in Europe over this period, demonstrating a marked migration of film professionals towards television series and video-on-demand platforms. The Covid-19 pandemic accelerated this transition, severely affecting the film industry. The report details that, despite a higher volume of work in the series sector (for 2015-2022, the average is 1.7 European productions for television and 2.2 for VOD, compared with 1.4 in cinema), job insecurity remains a major issue, with competition exacerbated by the growing number of professionals attracted by this expanding sector.
