Josep Borrell calls for end to “humanitarian catastrophe” in Gaza

On Tuesday 5 March, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, discussed the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip in a European External Action Service blog, 3 days after urging the UN to call for an urgent cessation of hostilities in the Middle East (see EUROPE 13363/20).

The international community needs to take decisive steps to save Gazan civilians from both starvation and violence”, wrote Mr Borrell, arguing that the humanitarian aid delivered to Gaza was “totally insufficient” and that the “bloodbath” for dozens of civilians on 29 February during a food distribution (see EUROPE 13362/15) was the “direct consequence” of this lack of aid.

The High Representative has asked for the Kerem Shalom, Karmi and Erez crossing points to be opened. “Maritime access should be granted immediately to bring much-needed relief. Airdrops can be a short-term emergency measure, but they cannot replace access by land and sea”, he added.

In recent days, the United States, Jordan and France have carried out airdrops of food. A European Commission spokesperson confirmed on Wednesday 6 March that European aid by air and sea was also being considered, particularly from Cyprus, which Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will be visiting on Thursday and Friday. (Original version in French by Bernard Denuit)
