In a new report on Friday 23 February, the CAN Europe coalition of environmental NGOs contributed to the drafting of guidelines for Renewables Acceleration Areas (ZAEnR).
The coalition reiterates the need for Member States to move to fully renewable energy by 2040, with increased solar and wind capacity and supporting infrastructure. It therefore stresses the importance of “robust spatial planning and mapping to accelerate the deployment of renewable energies in a sustainable, efficient and inclusive way”.
The report proposes a framework and methodological steps aimed, among other things, at adopting a global approach, integrating renewables acceleration areas into global renewable energy mapping and planning, and identifying the untapped potential of artificial surfaces.
It also emphasises transparent multi-level governance and meaningful public participation to ensure that the designation and use of those areas contribute effectively to the rapid and fair expansion of renewable energies.
