Maroš Šefčovič highlights importance of energy infrastructure for decarbonisation and electrification of European economy

The Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, Maroš Šefčovič, chaired, on Monday 26 February, a new Clean Transition Dialogue on the role of energy infrastructure in the green transition. This is the fifth dialogue with industry in a series which will culminate in the publication of a final report before the European Summit in April (see EUROPE 13357/20).

Energy infrastructure is at the centre of our attention, given its strategic importance (for) a secure supply of clean energy, low energy prices and the decarbonisation and electrification of our economy”, Mr Šefčovič said on social network X, following the meeting with the entire energy infrastructure sector.

Transmission and distribution network operators, representatives from the energy storage, battery and hydrogen segments, manufacturers of equipment for renewable energies and electricity producers were present, as well as the digital and flexibility solutions, recharging stations and carbon capture, storage and utilisation sectors.

The European Commission discussed with all these participants how to accelerate the development of an efficient, intelligent and better interconnected energy infrastructure system.

The Commission also recalled the EU’s support for trans-European energy networks through the TEN-E Regulation, revised in 2022, which promotes the integration of renewable energies and new clean energy technologies into the energy system, and through the Network Action Plan, published in November 2023 (see EUROPE 13302/8).

The Clean Transition Dialogues are an initiative of President Ursula von der Leyen, announced during her State of the Union address in September 2023. Further dialogues will take place in March. (Original version in French by Pauline Denys)
