European Commission grants €594 million to eight cross-border energy infrastructure projects

On Thursday 25 January, the European Commission allocated €594 million under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) to eight cross-border energy infrastructure projects that were granted the status of Projects of Common Interest (PCIs) in 2022.

Several projects involve setting up a European carbon value chain.

A total of €189 million has been allocated to the D’Artagnan project alone, a CO2 export platform in the port of Dunkirk, France.

The CO2 infrastructure in the port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands (an import terminal and 200 km of underwater line) will receive €157 million.

The sum of €131 million has been granted to the Northern Lights project, linking CO2 capture initiatives in several EU Member States and Norway, and €2.54 million to a CO2 infrastructure project in Gdańsk, Poland.

In addition, the Commission is providing €100 million for the Gabreta smart grid project between the Czech Republic and Germany, €1.22 million to reinforce the Lonny-Achêne-Gramme electricity interconnection between France and Belgium, and €12.77 million for the Depomures natural gas storage facility in Romania.

The funding decision follows a call for projects launched in 2023, which was open to energy infrastructure projects with PCI status that contribute to achieving the EU’s climate and energy objectives. (Original version in French by Pauline Denys)
