The European Commission announced, on Wednesday 24 January, that the commissioning in December 2023 of the 400 kV (kilovolt) double-circuit overhead power line between Ostrołęka-Stanisławów was the latest investment made to support the Baltic States in their efforts to synchronise with the continental European grid.
Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are the last EU countries whose electricity grids are still synchronised with Russia and Belarus.
The 108-kilometre power line will facilitate a synchronous connection between the Baltic States and the continental European system via the existing interconnection between Lithuania and Poland (LitPol Link).
Implemented by the Polish national transmission system operator Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne S.A., this line is a project of common interest under the EU’s first list of PCIs (projects of common interest). It was also supported by the European Regional Development Fund (POIiŚ 2014-2020) and funding of more than €3 million under the Connecting Europe Facility for Energy.
