On Wednesday 24 January, the members of the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality (FEMM) voted on draft resolution on the EU’s priorities for the 68th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, scheduled for 11 to 22 March.
The text, submitted by Robert Biedroń (S&D, Polish), focuses on “addressing poverty, strengthening institutions and financing with a gender perspective”.
The report recognises that gender equality and women’s empowerment are essential to eradicating poverty. It highlights the importance of gender mainstreaming in all EU policies, including its external dimensions. The text also addresses issues such as gender-based violence, access to education and reproductive health, and the importance of women’s economic autonomy.
The resolution also calls for joint action to combat poverty among women, recognising the systemic and structural barriers that contribute to this problem. It stresses the need for equal access to education, the labour market and political and economic decision-making.
The European Parliament also stresses the need for a feminist foreign policy, aimed at strengthening the rights of women and girls in all their diversity. The resolution urges the adoption of ambitious commitments at the UN session and calls for adequate funding for UN Women.
