16/01/24 (Agence Europe) – At its plenary session on Tuesday 16 January, the European Parliament adopted the draft 2023 annual report on European competition policy by Stéphanie Yon-Courtin (Renew Europe, French) by 481 votes to 42, with 93 abstentions. The report (see EUROPE 13306/19, 13278/27, 13256/14) stresses the need for the European Commission to take effective action against predatory takeovers, cartels and anti-competitive practices. A large chapter is devoted to digital technology. Stéphanie Yon-Courtin said that by promoting fair competition in the EU, competition policy had become a bulwark against unfair competition from subsidised foreign companies and digital giants, protecting the interests of European businesses and households. She believes that the United States’ Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) marks a paradigm shift, so this policy can ensure Europe’s green reindustrialisation and strategic autonomy. (EV)
