16/01/24 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 15 January, the chairmen of the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs and Development Committees, David McAllister (EPP, German) and Tomas Tobé (EPP, Swedish), announced that the European Parliament would not be observing the presidential elections in Azerbaijan on 7 February “and will therefore comment neither on the process nor on the results that will be announced afterwards”. “No individual Member of the European Parliament has been authorised to observe or comment on this electoral process on its behalf”, they added in a joint statement, adding that, should a Member of the European Parliament decide to comment on the ballot, they would do so on their own initiative and should in no way represent or commit the European Parliament through a statement or action.
