16/01/24 (Agence Europe) – In a report by Javier Solé (Greens/EFA, Spain) adopted on 16 January (492 votes in favour, 73 against and 55 abstentions), the European Parliament stressed the “growing role of the Parliament in the Union’s external action, which has gradually evolved into a substantial role”, and the distinct role and value of the Union’s parliamentary diplomacy in supporting and consolidating the visibility and impact of the Union’s common foreign and security policy (CFSP). Regretting that the Commission, the EU Council and the EEAS still do not consider the European Parliament as a fully-fledged player in the ‘Team Europe’ approach, MEPs believe that the European Parliament has significant and as yet untapped potential to further develop its diplomatic role and its contribution to achieving the objectives of the CFSP.
