09/01/24 (Agence Europe) – EU Member States will face a severe labour shortage to counter demographic decline, and the EU “needs an annual influx of one million migrants, because that is the number of the working-age population that leaves every year”. This is what EU Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson said on Tuesday 9 January after a visit to Greece on Monday, according to Reuters. “This means that legal immigration must increase by more or less one million a year, which is a real challenge to achieve in an orderly fashion”, she added. Acknowledging that current rates of legal immigration stand at 3.5 million a year, Ms Johansson stressed the need for an “orderly process”. During her visit, the Commissioner also welcomed the progress made by Greece in managing migration. (SP)
