Flooding in Pas-de-Calais, MEP Karima Delli stresses importance of ‘zero net artificialisation of land’ objective

09/01/2024 (Agence Europe)Visiting flood victims in the Pas-de-Calais region on Monday 8 January, French MEP Karima Delli (Greens/EFA) called for consistent measures to combat the massive artificialisation of land to which she attributes the flooding. “In view of the dramatic flooding suffered by the inhabitants of the Pas-de-Calais, the objective of ‘Zero Net Artificialisation’ must be an imperative priority for the Hauts-de-France region. The Greens are calling for the implementation of an ambitious plan to promote better water management and anticipate flooding in the Pas-de-Calais”, said the Chair for Greens Group in the Hauts-de-France region. A proposal for an EU directive on soil monitoring currently under discussion cites artificialisation as one of the pressures on this resource (see EUROPE 13216/4, 13316/6) and the European Commission is preparing an initiative on water resilience (EUROPE 13322/6).
