07/12/2023 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 7 December, members of the European Parliament’s Committee on Industry, Research and Energy approved the provisional political agreement reached between Parliament and the EU Council on the European digital identity wallet (35 votes in favour, 13 against, 6 abstentions) on 8 November (see EUROPE 13288/12). The vote by MEPs in committee was originally due to take place on 28 November but had to be postponed because certain minor points in the text still needed to be clarified (see EUROPE 13302/38). The agreement will now have to be voted on by MEPs in plenary session and ratified by the Member States. They will then have 24 months after the adoption of the implementing acts defining the technical specifications of the digital identity wallet to make it available to citizens. (TM)
