05/12/2023 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 5 December, the Socialists and Democrats political group in the European Parliament published a study detailing a proposal for an additional instrument for the European internal market. They are calling for “consideration to be given to a levy for a fairer single market”. Their approach is simple: introduce a ‘tax’ on the most profitable companies in order to redistribute some of the profits made. “It’s the big companies that tend to benefit most from a remarkable increase in trade”, explains Biljana Borzan (S&D, Croatian), the group’s Vice-Chair responsible for economic affairs. “The revenue generated by taxing multinationals [...] would help the EU to repay its Covid-19 debt and finance its main priorities”. According to the report, such a levy could raise between €4 and €10 billion a year. Read the study: https://aeur.eu/f/9yi (IS)
