05/12/2023 (Agence Europe) – The European Commissioner for International Partnerships, the Finnish Social Democrat Jutta Urpilainen, has been granted by the President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, the unpaid electoral leave that she was requesting until 28 January and 11 February 2024 to campaign for the presidential elections in Finland (see EUROPE 13296/23). The European Commission announced this on Saturday 2 December, once Ms von der Leyen had been duly informed of Ms Urpilainen’s official candidacy for the supreme magistracy in her country. During Ms Urpilainen’s temporary withdrawal, Commission Vice-President Margarítis Schinás will take care of the International Partnerships portfolio in addition to his duties as Vice-President responsible for Migration and the Promotion of the European Way of Life. The Commission indicated that it had also informed the European Parliament and the Council of the EU of these temporary changes. (AN)
