On Thursday 23 November, the European Research Council (ERC) announced that it had selected 308 researchers out of 2,130 applicants for this year’s Consolidator Grants.
The total budget for this tranche of subsidies for 2023 is €627 million.
This grant programme, offered as part of Horizon Europe, is designed to support excellent researchers in all scientific fields who wish to consolidate their own research teams.
The ERC stresses that the results announced on 23 November are provisional.
The European Commission, on behalf of the EU, and the UK Government have reached a political agreement on the UK’s association with Horizon Europe from 1 January 2024 (see EUROPE 13293/13).
Therefore, the association will only apply to award procedures implementing the 2024 and subsequent budgets.
Research entities established in the United Kingdom may participate in the grant award procedures supported by the 2023 budget appropriations. However, they will not be covered by the UK’s association with Horizon Europe and will not be eligible for European funding.
The ERC specifies that the transitional arrangement applies to this and other calls in the 2023 work programme. This means that successful applicants based in the UK are only eligible for European funding if they transfer their proposal to an eligible host institution.
