23/11/2023 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission paid, on Wednesday 22 November, a further tranche of €1.5 billion to Ukraine as part of the €18 billion in European Macro-financial Assistance for 2023 (see EUROPE 13277/5). This assistance will be used to fund the immediate needs of a country suffering from Russian military aggression: paying civil servants’ salaries and pensions, maintaining public services and repairing critical infrastructure. According to a Commission assessment dated 18 October, Ukraine has implemented measures on which aid is conditional, such as the phasing out of temporary emergency taxation, the re-establishment of the High Council of Justice and the High Qualification Council of Judges, and the restructuring of the Gas Transmission System Operator. To date, the EU has paid €16,5 billion of the €18 billion allocated. (MB)
