Nineteen Very Large Online Platforms and Very Large Online Search Engines designated under DSA publish their first transparency reports

As agreed under the DSA (see EUROPE 13282/25), the 19 digital giants designated as Very Large Online Platforms and Very Large Online Search Engines published, on Monday 6 November, their first transparency reports.

We can confirm that the 19 designated services have uploaded their transparency reports”, a European Commission spokesperson assured EUROPE.

The reports, published independently by each of the companies covered by the DSA, look at the human resources devoted to content moderation, the language skills of moderators and the accuracy indicators for content moderation decisions.

The first series of reports reveals, for example, that company X (formerly Twitter) has 2,294 human moderators in English, 81 in German, 52 in French, 12 in Arabic and two in Italian. The bulk of the work within the EU for the social network bought by the eccentric US billionaire Elon Musk is found in France, where 16,288 messages were deleted between 28 April and 20 October, compared with 7,160 in Germany and 7,743 in Spain.

For its part, the report published by Amazon states that action was taken against 15,774 users in the first half of 2023 and that responses were provided to 8,863 requests made by the competent authorities of EU Member States. More than half of them came from Germany, compared with 817 from France. Some 274 million content removal procedures have been carried out.

The Meta group, for its part, has deleted more than 103 million user accounts from pages or groups, rejected just under 10 million products from its marketplace and banned 724,445 users from accessing it. Just over 42,000 notifications were received by YouTube and 32,522 measures were taken for legal reasons by the company, while 20,157 notifications were processed automatically.

The Chinese video-sharing giant TikTok explains that it has 6,125 people to moderate content within the EU, and claims to have taken action - on average within 13 hours - against reports of illegal content, and within 7 hours when the reports came from EU government authorities.
