On Friday 3 November, in a joint letter sent to the European Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson, the ambassadors of the Member States and the members of the European Parliament, a coalition of NGOs and industrial players from the energy sector called for the creation of an independent European Network of Network Operators for Hydrogen (ENNOH), as part of the ongoing negotiations on the gas package (see EUROPE B13260).
In addition to the creation of ENNOH, to set up an infrastructure specifically dedicated to hydrogen, they are calling for monitoring by an independent body such as the European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change (ESABCC) and/or the EU Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER), as well as integrated coordination with ENTSO-E and ENTSOG and consultation with renewable energy producers and end consumers.
The coalition says that the creation of this European entity will make it possible to bring down the cost of renewable hydrogen, prioritise renewable hydrogen for sectors that are difficult to electrify, avoid stranded assets and ensure proportionate development of the hydrogen network by coordinating with ENTSO-E to better reflect the areas where electricity is or is not a viable solution.
