EU and Seoul begin negotiations for future digital trade agreement

02/11/2023 (Agence Europe)On Tuesday 31 October, in the margins of the 11th meeting of the EU-South Korea Trade Committee, the European Commissioner for Trade, Valdis Dombrovskis, announced the opening of negotiations between the EU and South Korea with a view to an agreement on digital trade. The two parties have shared a free trade agreement since 2011 and have decided to deepen this relationship through a new partnership focusing on digital trade, “an essential part of the digital and green transitions of our societies”, according to the joint statement published on Tuesday 31 October. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Mr Dombrovskis said that the future agreement would aim to establish “binding rules for greater consumer trust and more legal certainty for businesses”, as well as “preventing unjustified barriers to digital trade”.
